Most of my posts recently (the last year or three) have been about my various attempts to get myself a guardian...mostly looking at fire/summon druids. In preparation for the upcoming release of DIII *cheers* I have decided to do a softcore sept.
A few notes:
1) I have only beaten Hell Baal with one character (fishymancer)
2) I have a general dislike for melee characters
3) I like having a tank built-in (sorry, Nightfish)
So I was hoping to get some suggestions for my sept, I'll list a few suggestions that I've thought of...but I'm open to lots of input!
NOTE: I do have access to insight-level gear, but not much else.
Amazon
-Strafe/LF
-fishyzon
-plague/strafe
-frostmaiden w/ strafe backup
Assassin
-traps
-kick-trap
-something without traps?
Necro
-Bone necro w/ max CE
-skeleton necro
-poison
Druid
-Fire/summon
-hurricane druid
Barb
-berserker
-concentrate barb
sorc
-FO/TK
-meteorb
-blizz
-FO/CL
paladin
-hammerdin
-zeal pally
-convertadin
-Avenger
All that to say, I will probably play a caster first, to hopefully get some decent weapons for the barb and paladin (unless I go hammerdin, then the weapon is less important). Help me plan my DII farewell party before the DIII release!|||I'd consider a shapeshifter Druid and frenzy or WW Barb. Elemental zealot (frost or shock) for a Pally, and fishyzon (FA/LF) for the Zon.|||I do like the FA/LF zon a lot, so I'll probably go that way with her. Frozen Arrow is too cool to pass up.
As regards the pally, I've never played a hammerdin, and my general dislike for melee characters makes me wonder...maybe I should go with the cheesy choice, especially now that they're a bit more balanced with the most recent patch?|||Prepping for DIII, huh? I wouldn't even worry about gear - get in the spirit by buying all your items somewhere and then get rushed through Hell Baal on bnet. Welcome to the future!|||or you could, and bear with me on this, push those boundaries and go full-on melee sept... YOU CAN DOOOO EEET!
Amazon = Fendazon
Assassin = Kicksin
Barbarian = FrenZealer
Druid = FuryWolf
Necromancer = Daggermancer (FoW!)
Paladin = FanaZealer
Sorceress = Enchantress (FoW!)
If you really had to, a Whirlysin would also be acceptable... as would a VengSorc.
but seriously, anyone can randomly throw various spells around, but only those who truly have excess chutzpah choose to run up, slap a demons face & then rip it off.
also, since its germane to the OP...

QFE. Also, let us not forget the sage words of Jay Wilson (hereafter referred to as '***ing douche'), "You can’t really brag if it’s on a home computer where you could have cheated to create the character." So I suppose that makes the whole exercise pointless.|||That's actually not a bad idea...I've always done spell-based characters before, and I tend to feel like I'm done with them once I max my main skill. Something about socking points in synergies makes me feel tired with the whole excercise.
I think I need a physical damage (as much as possible) sept.
So I think I need to start with a berserk barb. Seems to me that Nightfish has a great guide for them around here somewhere...I just can't remember if he recommended Sword and Board or giant 2h...|||Well, if you like built-in tanks, that narrows down choices for Zon, Sin, Druid and Necro.
With Zon, do something that can take Valk. Not a Strafer, but remember Multiple Shot is a very viable option there, which doesn't share the D/A/E bug with Strafe. If you like bows, do FA/MS zon. Easily two most powerful skills in the bow side in PvM.
For Sin, do something where you can use one of the two summons. Combine with whatever you like more, be it Traps or Martial arts.
For Druid, do some sort of a summoner.
For Necro, maybe try a golemmancer? It can be a great tank.
For Barbarian, have you though of Frenzy?
For Sorceress, I recommend combining either cold skill (Blizzard / Frozen Orb) with either Nova or Fireball. All combinations in that setup are relatively easy on the skill points distribution.
I would recommend some sort of zealot for a Pally, elemental or Fanatic, however your gear is.
That's my 7 cents.

To be honest, that's not one of my "great" guides, but it works well enough.
As for the shield or 2h... 9/10 times I recommend the big badass 2h weapon. 10/10 on barbs. Really, a barb with a shield is just not a man. Pretty much the only characters I used shields on a lot are sorceresses and necromanceres.|||I started a necro this morning, and I've decided to do something a little different...mostly a beefy iron golem, bone prison (for CC and the synergy to bone armor), maxed CE, and I'll make the necro melee to get the first kill.
Who knows what'll happen, but it's certainly not boring. I'm thinking I may max out fire golem for the extra damage on my IG.
@Nightfish - Thanks for stopping by and dropping the 2h hint. I think I agree, I have played with S&B Barbs in the past...maybe that's why I got bored with them so quickly. =)
@Greebo - I'm starting to think over the characters I've played and let fall by the wayside...and most of them were very safe builds with tanks, so I may be revising that thought and going for something a little more risky. It's SC after all...why not die a few times? That means that a kicker assassin is now near the top of my list, along with a FA/LF zon, and maybe a hunger druid...although I don't know how that would go with lower end gear...|||For the assassin you could go with Tiger Strike and Dragon Tail, very explosive and fun.
I'd use Fire Claw over Hunger, FC has a higher Attack% and added elemental damage, that can be huge if synergised. Also, you can start as a fire druid and eventually put points into wolf/bear to keep the gameplay fresh.
Frenzy is way too fun to pass up, I found Berserk to be kind of tedious/boring, but whatever lifts your skirt.
If you want to go all melee, Fend/Jab is a lot of fun. Hell, there are so many fun combinations for amazons, just put some in a hat and pick one at random.
My personal favorite sorc is the blizzballer, blova is pretty fun too. You could use nova if you want to do all "melee," seeing as you have to be in melee range to use it
And good luck with your necromancer!
Cheers!
